Course Objectives

At the conclusion of the Mini-Fellowship Program, participants in all tracks will be able to:

  • Create and implement an action plan to improve the quality of geriatric education at their institution

  • Learn how to maximize content delivery effectiveness through developing platform skills
  • Through the use of standardized students, work constructively with other participants to solve communication challenges
  • Demonstrate functional feedback techniques during one-minute precepts
  • Identify cognitive and physical dysfunctions in elderly patients


Generalist Track Objectives

In addition, participants in the Generalist Track should be better able to:

  • Educate trainees in the evaluation and management of gait and balance problems and falls in elderly persons

  • Perform and teach a 20-minute Medicare exam

  • Utilize multimedia and web-based learning tools for teaching geriatrics

Hospitalist Track Objectives

In addition, participants in the Hospitalist Track should be better able to:

  • Provide instruction on caring for elderly persons in a hospital setting

  • Identify issues involved in discharge planning across levels of care

  • Familiarize students with ethical issues in advance care planning

  • Educate trainees in the evaluation and management of gait and balance problems and falls in elderly persons

  • Recognize and teach the benefits of hospice for end of life care

Palliative Care Track Objectives

In addition, participants in the Palliative Care track should be better able to:

  • Instruct trainees to recognize the need for palliative care for elderly persons

  • Provide instruction on caring for elderly persons in need of palliative care
  • Recognize and teach the benefits of hospice for end of life care
  • Familiarize students with ethical issues in advance care planning

  • Set expectations for the last hours of life

Skilled Nursing Facility Track Objectives

  • Educate trainees in the evaluation and management of gait and balance problems and falls in elderly persons
